Facebook is constantly evolving. On 1 October 2011, the social media platform made it mandatory that all Facebook Pages using custom apps or tabs created outside of Facebook are hosted on a server with an SSL certificate.

Security is your friend, but make sure your fans can still see you!

The Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol was created to ensure transactions between servers and browsers are secure. This certification protects your private data, such as contact or payment details.

Facebook has come under a lot of fire over the past few years regarding their constantly changing privacy settings and the lack of information and advice regarding them.

This update is a strong move by Facebook to maintain the privacy desires of their users, and offers greater protection to what information is shared within the platform. But remember: you are still sharing information online!

We are amazed to see how many tabs and apps still haven’t been updated yet.

What does this actually mean?

All Facebook users have the option to browse Facebook via a secure connection (https) when possible.

This option can be configured in the Security section of your Account Settings, which is accessed via the drop arrow in the top right hand corner of Facebook when you are logged in (see screenshot below).

This option has now been forced onto all content within Facebook. So if a Facebook Page has an app or tab that is not hosted on a secure server, users will either not see the tab or app at all, or will see this message:

This message doesn’t make a business or brand on Facebook look very professional…

Any tab or app that is hosted on a secure server will function as normal. Apps and tabs created by third party apps or services endorsed by Facebook may also function properly, however you will need to check with the third party provider to be sure.

What should you do?

If you are unsure about your app or tab, first check whether your app or tab appears when you are browsing over a secure connection when logged into Facebook (by activating the security settings above).

If it doesn’t display, you will need to have an SSL certificate installed on the server where your tab or app is hosted and resubmit it to Facebook. Facebook provides some details about the secure browsing requirements here.

There are a range of SSL certificate options with varying costs. Make sure you get the right one for your function and server.

As we developed the Beerenberg Facebook Page apps before this update, we needed to purchase and install an SSL certificate on their server prior to the deadline.

It’s now become part of our process to arrange and install SSL certificates for all new custom Facebook Page tabs and apps, such as the two we recently launched for Adelaide Biplanes (shown above) and Port Elliot Beach House YHA (shown below).

This update is another way Facebook keep us all on our toes, but we still believe it’s a fun and exciting time to be involved in the big wide world of digital!

Happy new year! Welcome to 2012, and a very warm welcome to our new Administration Assistant, Kim Danton.

Kim replaces Jaz – who is off to explore Deutschland! – and has previously worked in both hospitality and accounts, making her ideal to manage our day-to-day studio and business administration tasks.

Two weeks in and we reckon Kim is a perfect addition to our team, sociable, efficient and fun, all rolled up in one! Welcome aboard Kim!

It’s no secret we’re big table tennis fans at Memphis.

Our table gets a healthy workout daily from the team at lunch and after work, as well as the all important times during the day when you just need to clear your head from heavy digital strategy, design, development and project management tasks.

So to celebrate our love of the game – and to further decorate our studio in our own style – our amazing Creative Director, Flavio Argemi, designed a sweet infographic on the UNOfficial Rules of Ping Pong, which now proudly adorns the wall near our ping pong table.

What a year it’s been! New office, and so many new faces within it!
